fog bubbles
Time: 30 minutes
Skill level: Easy with a little set up
items:
- 1 narrow cylinder, or graduated cylinder. It needs to be tall (about 12 to 24 inches) and narrow.
- Dry Ice. Just a few chunks.
- Heavy, thick gloves
- Safety glasses
- Warm water
- Dish soap (Dawn seems to work best)
- Large flat bottom bowl, or sheet tray
- Food coloring - optional
instructions:
Step 1) Place the cylinder in the bowl or tray.
Step 2) Pour the warm water into the cylinder (if you want to add food coloring, go for it)
Step 3) With your gloves on, add a few chunks of dry ice to the cylinder.
Step 4) Watch the fog flow and some fun with that portion.
Step 5) Now put a few squirts of dish soap in the cylinder. The bubbles are now flowing.
Step 6) Grab the bubbles and squeeze them and watch the bubbles turn into fog.
grandpa’s thoughts:
This is a super fun activity to do with your grandkids. It’s very interactive and you can teach them about dry ice. Did you know that dry ice is 110 degrees below zero. Dry ice is not a frozen liquid, its Carbon Dioxide that is compressed and frozen. When dry ice melts, it tuns back into gas, not a liquid.
Give it a try and you'll be the cool grandpa.
